Healthy Eating Explained

It is important to understand there are no unhealthy foods, only unhealthy diets. Healthy eating is about eating the right quantities and balance of foods on a regular basis, rather than whether you succumb to fish and chips or a slice of chocolate cake occasionally.

The key word is moderation.

Eating the right balance of foods from the major food groups is the foundation of day-to-day wellbeing, and will reduce your long-term risk of disease.

There are 6 main nutrient groups:

  • Carbohydrate
  • Protein
  • Fats
  • Vitamins
  • Minerals
  • Water

The energy to perform daily activities is provided through 3 major nutrients: carbohydrate, fats and proteins. These have different functions within the body and we will look at these in more detail on further pages, as well as the role of water.
